Looking for an ATAK Alternative?
An honest answer: sometimes you want ATAK. And sometimes simpler wins.
First, Credit Where Due
ATAK is remarkable software. The Android Team Awareness Kit is a full situational-awareness platform: Cursor-on-Target messaging, TAK servers, mission packages, video feeds, and a plugin ecosystem nothing else matches. If your organization runs TAK infrastructure and has the people to administer it, use it.
But that power has a price that has nothing to do with money. ATAK assumes someone on your team will play network administrator: standing up or renting a TAK server, issuing certificates, managing data packages, and teaching every member an interface built for full-time operators. On iPhone, the counterpart app carries a reduced feature set, so mixed-device teams start uneven.
For a lot of real teams, the honest requirement list is much shorter: where am I, where is my team, and can I say it over a radio. That is the job Red Grid MGRS is built for.
Two Different Jobs
Choose ATAK when you need
- A full common operating picture across many units
- Cursor-on-Target integration with other TAK systems
- Plugins: drone feeds, video, specialized sensors
- Server-synced mission packages and overlays
- An admin who owns the infrastructure
Choose Red Grid MGRS when you need
- A live 10-digit grid in seconds, no setup at all
- The same app and features on iPhone and Android
- Team positions over Meshtastic LoRa, no server ever
- Radio-ready reports: SALUTE, MEDEVAC, CFF and more
- Zero accounts, zero tracking, verifiable in airplane mode
The difference in one sentence: ATAK networks an organization; Red Grid MGRS equips a person and their team.
What You Get Out of the Box
DAGR-Class Navigation
Live 10-digit MGRS, magnetic declination, waypoints, bearing and distance, dead reckoning, resection: the core land-nav math, free.
Offline Maps
Download topographic, standard, or dark tactical tiles for your AO. Everything keeps working with the radios off and the towers down.
Meshtastic Team Awareness
Pair an inexpensive LoRa radio and your team appears on the same offline map, with encrypted short messages. No server, no subscription infrastructure. Radio required.

Common Questions
Is Red Grid MGRS a full replacement for ATAK?
Not for everything, and we will not pretend otherwise. ATAK's plugin ecosystem, CoT server sync, and mission packages have no lightweight equivalent. If the mission is land navigation plus small-team awareness, Red Grid covers it with none of the setup.
Does it run on iPhone?
Yes, identically on iOS and Android: same features, same pricing. Mixed-device teams stay even.
How does team awareness work without a server?
Over Meshtastic LoRa radios. Positions and short messages travel radio to radio, sealed end to end with keys that never leave your devices. A radio is required for the team layer; solo navigation needs no extra hardware.
What does it cost?
The navigator is free, including full 10-digit precision. Pro unlocks all 12 tools, offline maps, the Meshtastic team layer, and all 6 reports at $3.99/month or $49.99 once for lifetime.
Try the Simpler Tool First
Install it, walk outside, and you have a 1-meter grid before an ATAK server would have finished booting.
